Survival in the Settlement Domes

The planet Dreamland became a hostile environment as the Travellers arrived. Due to the high levels of radiation created by the interaction of incompatible technologies. This situation was something the people had not planned for.

How could one foresee the long dead relics of an ancient civilization reacting and destroying most of your tech simply by its proximity?

Foreseen or not, upon arrival the lead ship explosion and then radiation burst had very nearly neutralized all their technology. Most ships suffered from the wave of interference leaving them helpless as they entered the system. Chaos and panic was everywhere. Fear took over as the ship’s systems continued failing to respond, communication down, automated systems ceased operating.

Manual systems were the only remaining, working parts of the ships. As per their duty, the pilots assumed their positions prepared to manually land the ships. Without the computer guidance and navigational aid a landing was indeed outside their training. The main systems out, backup systems out, dead stick landing was the last hope. Each pilot had to guess plan the approach, without coordination or guidance of the of fleet control, or planetary data of suitable landing locations.

Manual landing should never have been a choice, without computer guidance the approach speeds were beyond human skills. Simulations prior had shown a probability of 75% failure rate, not acceptable in any condition, until now. The simulations hadn’t included the widespread systems failures in their scope.

The attempt to land wasn’t an immediate action, that might have been better, get it over with. The time from the first explosion and loss of systems until landing, was two days. Around the clock effort was made to restore the functions lost, with no success. It came down to the pilots. No pressure.

As the pilots strapped into the control seats most of the ship’s instrumentation had been restored, but, where to land. They knew the speed, the trust, the altitude, pressures, and temperatures. Without, however, the geological data of the surface, mountains, desserts, oceans they had no way to know the type of terrain they were headed to. They braced for the worst.

Building The Settlement Domes

The first people to arrive are now long gone, changed by the new world they found. They had to struggle and adapt in building their new homes. The domes are their way to keep the people safe. The walls protected everyone inside as they settled into their new homes and routines.

In some cases, the domes that began as emergency shelters were developed into thriving communities. Constructed by cannibalizing their nearby machines meant the domes were not equal. Not having access to the same equipment or raw materials created hardships and only the best equipped of the domes were able to survive for generations.

There were domes that were not successful, starving for raw materials left some domes without protection. Seeking shelter from the radiation the people moved to other domes, but the exposure left them scared and mutated. Working survival suits are converted to amour for the Knights and Warriors, not for the others that work under a dome. Those suits are no guarantee of protection either.

The people had evolved in ways they could never have foreseen as their journey began, the new world they found had dangers that continue to plague them even now. The new world has changed their appearance, their core DNA had been altered. The greater the exposure the greater change, those who remained in the protective domes saw the least change.
